Try out this video and prepare to be surprised at the feelings you will feel in your hips, low back, groin, and adductors (the muscles on the inside of your legs). Let us know how you feel!
I devised this movement practice when I had a lot of pain in my low back and nothing seemed to help. By lying on your back you give your vertebrae a rest and allow your legs and hips to move in ways that aren’t typically possible when you are standing.
You will probably feel tightness in new areas – for instance, along the inside of your legs. This is an area that rarely gets used, the connective tissue (fascia) and muscles are weak and cannot do what is needed to support your back.
Yes, I’m talking about Butt Strength!
Even though you hear endlessly about how important strong abs are to low back health, I’m going to share a little secret with you. Have a strong butt – your gluteus maximus and gluteus medius – is even more important.
In this section of my course, Awaken your Core, I teach you how to strengthen these muscles that have been outsourced for most of your life to a chair.
Tough Love Alert: If your butt muscles aren’t strong enough to lift you out of a chair without using your arms on the arm rests, then you are at serious risk of being confined to a wheelchair! twenty years from now.
Do You Have a Fire in Your Belly?
I actually get quite irritated with two approaches to aging: one asks you to look great (50 and Fabulous!) and the other asks you to age gracefully (whatever that means). Sure, it’s nice to look great but, for my part, I prioritize my attitude, taking care of myself (in the ways suggesting in my course), and holding myself fiercely in those endeavors.
I’m not sure what aging gracefully means, but it doesn’t sound like it’s going to get me where I want to go. Enough said about that.
If you are in the second half of your life, you have to take charge (not by pushing through things) but by loving yourself more, putting yourself first, and being vigilant about your needs. You have things to do and time is running out. It’s now; not later.
I have a fire in my belly and you might too! This doesn’t mean I push my way through tasks without feeling my feelings like I used to. This fire fuels a different sort of energy. I am excited and energized to learn how I can support my body as I get older.
That’s what we’re doing here: Yes. Stronger Together.
