Hello Dear One: 

I was standing in line to have an author autograph her book and I began to talk to the woman ahead of me in line. This was my second career, I explained,  and that I was teaching restorative movement and focusing on women who were over 50. I have begun, I told her, to pay much more attention to stress in women of our age.

It Is Time for Me Now

She said, “That’s great, because I have just dedicated the next ten years to taking care of ME! I’m done taking care of everybody else!”

I really had to smile, because I’d like to feel the same way, I get there sometimes, but other times I fall right back into my old, habitual, workaholic ways. You’d never know that I had retired from a 32-year career the way I run around.

As each year passes, though, I become more aware that this time is for “me” and what I make of it is entirely up to me.

Brené Brown Feels Her Midlife Unraveling

A friend posted this excerpt from a blog by Brené Brown, that made me question how successful I have been at taking time for me and even more than that, making my life the one I desired. Here, though, Brené Brown is talking about midlife, in one’s 30’s and 40’s.

“That’s nothing”, I laughed to myself! “Wait until you get to your 60’s!”

She says,

Time is growing short. There are unexplored adventures ahead of you. You can’t live the rest of your life worried about what other people think. You were born worthy of love and belonging. Courage and daring are coursing through your veins. You were made to live and love with your whole heart. It’s time to show up and be seen. I certainly feel this way and perhaps you do too.

So, what is stopping me? What?

I used to think it was my low back pain, my chronic neurological problem, my lack of energy.

I’m More Aware of Stress

Now, I am coming to understand the powerful role that long-term stress plays in our lives.

Brené Brown began this except by telling us, her readers, that the universe had “placed her hands upon your shoulders, pulled you close and whispered this message in your ear: It is time to live your life and activate your gifts. This coming decade could be designated as all about you. All you have to do is listen.

Dr. Stress is Sending Us a “Text”

But I hear this message just a little differently. Rather than the universe sending you a “text,” I believe it is the stress in our bodies sending us a “text.”

I have come to believe that every ache and pain I get is a “text” that says, “Pay attention, AnnMerle.”

When I quiet down, pay attention, and listen to my body, I realize how differently I feel than in my day-to-day, running around mode. I can feel my body settle, get soft, feel – just feel. Those moments are so rare, but they are profound.

And when the pain and craziness comes screaming back, I read it as a “text” sent to me by my stressed out self, asking me to notice what’s going on.
